The Office of Volunteers is more than just recruitment, training and placement of volunteers. Our volunteers are business people and retirees, homemakers and students who give their time and skills to the community in which they live.
The goals of this chapter’s volunteers are to address the changing needs of the community and seek volunteer participation and resources to focus on program development.
Disaster Services
Disaster Services responds to large and small disasters. Trained Red Cross workers help victims of house fires, floods, hurricanes, and other emergencies. Relief may include temporary shelter, food, clothing, and medical needs. All Red Cross disaster relief is provided free of charge, a gift made possible by the donations of time and money from the American people.
Armed Forces Emergency Services
Armed Forces Emergency Services provides Red Cross worldwide communication in time of family emergencies; counseling, emergency financial assistance, information and referral services to active military and their families.
Blood Services
The Blood Services program depends solely on volunteer donors to meet patient’s needs for safe human blood products. The Red Cross distributes blood, plasma, plasma derivatives and other products to those patients needing blood.
Health & Safety Services
Safety Services is an important part of the overall Red Cross effort to increase first aid and safety awareness. Red Cross trained volunteers teach courses in CPR, first aid, babysitting and water safety.
International Services
International Services initiatives focus on restoring family links through messaging and tracing and the dissemination of international humanitarian law. A volunteer Language Bank provides emergency translation when the need arises in the community.
Veteran Transportation
Red Cross volunteer drivers provide transportation for veterans and chapter volunteers serving at the VA Hospital in Martinsburg, WV. Red Cross van transports veterans with appointments every Monday, Wednesday and Friday. A seat on the van may be reserved by calling 301-739-0717 Ext. 201.
Youth Services
The purpose of Youth Services is to provide young people with opportunities that will encourage them to become the adult leaders of tomorrow. Various Red Cross youth courses and programs provide leadership training, community services, health awareness and intergenerational enrichment for today’s youth.
Caring Hands Gift Wrap
Community businesses, clubs, churches, schools and other volunteers have made the “Caring Hands Gift Wrap” a tremendous success. In coordination with the Valley Mall this fund raising effort has generated needed funds to support our programs and services.
